After testing various TV software and visiting loads of sites. most of them offer a free trial or preview and then they make you pay to sign up, or are cluttered with ads. I think that is ridiculous… so ive done my research and have found a couple of really decent sites. The first one Id like to draw your attention to is (viewmy.tv) This site has almost 1300 channels from around the globe and counting. it is free to register and they dont ask for stupid details, just your username and email address. It actually streams live channels so you dont have to download any and they have a pretty easy way of finding the channel you want. You can search through genre, country, region or name of the channel. oh and there are no ads either. Check this one out. With over 1300 channels from hundreds of countries, loads of features like channel rating, user recommendations, live chat, profile pages and much much more.
I don’t have a TV and don’t plan on getting one. I live where I can’t get any decent cable or satellite, anyway. But so what? I discovered I can watch just about ANYTHING on my computer?
So, here’s what I’ve learned. Consider this a quick primer:
There’re tons of those streaming tv sites: freetube, channelking, choosetowatch are just three of many.
They all have the same channels. If you’re an American (we and the Brits have about the best TV on the planet) there’s really no selection. I mean, who cares about Greek or Afghani TV? Even the Greeks and Afghanis don’t!
These live streaming TV sites have Fox SOMETIMES — someone streams it out of Las Vegas. They DON’T have ABC, NBC or the CW. I’m not sure why — guess there aren’t any private individuals who want to stream them, probably because they get served with cease and desist orders. I understand the equipment to stream a live broadcast is VERY expensive, so there aren’t that many people who can do it to begin with, anyway.
As far as I can tell, only TVU (which is good & free but has to be downloaded) has CBS. Sometimes PPMate has it (another downloadable player — there’s tons of those, too). Every once in awhile, though, CBS disappears. Guess the individual streaming it has to go out of town, shut down his server, gets a cease and desist order, or whatever. Who knows? Anyway, CBS streams out of San Francisco. I mention the cities, ’cause you have to take into account the time zone when you want to watch a particular show.
If you do your research, you’ll quickly find that there is no ONE way to watch TV on the Internet. To watch Fox, for example, I livestream Freetube — but now and then it disappears for weeks at a time. Then forget watching the Simpsons, et.al. live when Fox is gone. For CBS, I watch TVU Player. For other shows, I wait ’til someone uploads them to 66stage, greatstufftv, sidereel, stage6 — there’s TONS of sites.
They come and go, usually for the same reason alloftv came and went. But there’s always a hundred to take the place of those who bite the dust.
So, here’s the lesson: DON’T GET MARRIED TO ANY ONE SITE OR VIDEO/TV PLAYER, OR ANY ONE WAY OF WATCHING. Remain versatile and flexible, because sites, channels and players, etc. come and go without warning.
The upshot: We can all watch TV online very easily. There are different ways to do it, and no one way will allow you to see everything you want to see. There are: live streaming tv sites (freetube, etc); downloadable tv players (tvu, ppmate, etc) that allow you to search for movies and shows, then play them; sites that people upload shows to and allow you to watch online (not live, obviously — and no commercials!); and P2P sites that allow you to download movies and tv shows (probably the most problematic — such activity is what the MPAA and such are looking for). Personally, I don’t want all those movies and shows taking up my hard drive, so I just watch, I NEVER download.
Do your research. Not only will probably never miss an episode of the shows you like (though you may have to wait a few days for it to be uploaded after its original broadcast), you’ll discover shows you’d never otherwise see!
For example, I’m in the US, but I used to watch Britain’s “Blue Murder” — a GREAT crime drama I’d NEVER have seen any other way! WHO THE HECK NEEDS TO PAY FOR CABLE? Isn’t it enough that I’m paying for an Internet connection?!!
